Before I put light on the relationship between social media
and happiness I would like to define social media. Social media sites or apps
(like Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and Whatsapp etc.) are specially designed
for people to stay connected with friends, with their loved ones, and the
people from the rest of the world. In short, now we can talk to anybody in the
world anytime. However, social media helps connect people. Even though question
remains are people really happy now? As a part of my college assignment, I am
going to explain “the effects of social media on our happiness” through some of
my research on this subject.

According to my research on different sites on google, I
found that social media, instead of making people’s lives better, is addictive.
According to Washington.com, people spend an average 6 hours on social media
per day and this number increases in younger people, which is not good for
their social lives. A report on google states that people who usually update their
statuses all the time feel pain in their fingers while writing something. In
this era, the new generation is smarter than the older generation but even
after that they give more importance to their virtual lives than the real life.

Example: People create groups to stay in touch
with their friends and other near and dear ones on social sites and apps but
when they meet them in person they do not have anything to talk about and like
to stay engaged on their phones or other portable electronic devices. In my
opinion social media is decreasing people’s quality of lives by making them
less socialized. Also the use social media forces people to stay close to
charging ports so that they can use their phones without running out of battery
which is quite similar to an animal tied with a rope.

On the other side social media also has a lot of benefits
like sharing good and beneficial information which is good for users. It helps
in circulating news quickly as compared to other sources. The most important
thing is that it is free for all so everyone can take advantage of it by
sharing and receiving information.

As part of this college assignment, I researched the
advantages and disadvantages of social media. Effects of social media on our
happiness are clear given its advantages and disadvantages.

Advantages of Social
Media

·
Connectivity: Today’s generation is smarter. They
want to stay connected with everyone regardless of location and region. The
benefit of social media is that you can connect with anyone from everywhere to
learn and share.

·
Awareness: Social Media helps people innovate
the way they live. It helps people discover new stuff to enhance their lives.
From students to professionals, engineers to doctors, farmers to teachers,
everyone can take advantage of social media to make themselves aware of
innovations.

·
Information and updates: Social media helps people to stay
informed and updated. It circulates information faster as compared to other
sources like television or print media.

·
Develops professional skills: With the use of social media you can
enhance your personal and professional skills. You can interact with
professionals from various fields.

Social media does have positive impacts on human life, but
most of the time we forget to acknowledge the negative side of social
networking. Apart from having advantages, social media has disadvantages also.
According to a report, out of all the time spent online, 42% is spent viewing
content online, 22% on social networking, and 36% is spent on other activities
like emails, searches etc.  According to
another report, 48% of people check Facebook after going to bed, 49% of
teenagers are interrupted while eating, and 61% of teenagers have to check
facebook at least once a day

·
Cyberbullying: Increased use of social media has
raised a threat of cyberbullying. According to reports on the internet, most
children and teens have become victims to cyberbullying.

·
Health issues: One of the negative impacts of social
media is on our health due to excessive usage. It brings disorder in our daily
routine as many people get lazy due to the excessive usages of networking
sites.

·
Increases anti-social behavior: However people want to stay connected
with their loved ones and rest of the world.
When they meet with these people in real life they don’t have anything
to talk about. People get extensively involved in social media and are
eventually cut off from the rest of society.

·
Lack of privacy: People share their personal
information on social networking sites. It makes them easy target for hackers
and stalkers. Identity theft is another problem for people who get extensively
involved on social media.

In conclusion, I think the social media has negative and
positive aspects. It depends of every individual which way they choose to use it.
Social media is not a bad thing if used in a right way. The fact is that most
of the users do not use social media the way it should be used and this leads
to addiction to social media. Social media addiction has a solution.

Finally, in spite of its negative effects, social media is
here to stay. It is necessary for people to educate themselves and the next
generation on the negative effects of social media along with positive effects.

As said by Erik Qualman
“We don’t have a choice on whether we do social media, the question is how well
we do it”. (http://www.azquotes.com/quote/679648)
