Why of plants, organisms, and their genetics. People are

Why You Should Be Against GMO’sKyra Delikowski Genetically modified organisms were first introduced into the U.S. 4 years ago on March 28th. Since then, there has been an ongoing debate on whether GMOs are helpful or harmful. Some people say they are helping solve world hunger. Scientists and their studies say that they are harmful for your health. Which side do you support? The people who support GMOs have their reasons, but these reasons are wrong and not provided with evidence. They say that they end world hunger, but how great are they really if they are harming our health in the long run? We don’t actually know what they are doing to our bodies and rumor has it that they can increase the risk of cancer and diseases. GMOs should not exist and we should work on getting rid of them for the benefit of our world. One of the most known problems going on in the GMO fight is the company Monsanto and what they are doing to our food. Monsanto is a company that specializes in genetically modifying and selling seeds and herbicides. They have sold to many companies since 2005, such as seeds of anything and everything to seed companies all over the US. People are most angry about this because of the loss of agricultural diversity, which is a variety of plants, organisms, and their genetics.  People are concerned about this because if we add a one plant’s genes to another plant of a different species, it becomes more like the first plant. For example, if a company would put carrot genes into a radish, the radish would become more like a carrot. People are concerned about this because we could be eating things that are not what they say to be. Genetically Modified plants are simply causing less biodiversity in the world today. Not a lot of people know this, but GMOs have actually been around for a long time. They have been around since the Industrial Revolution, which was from 1760-1820. The Industrial Revolution was when companies were transitioning to new machines and methods for manufacturing, and one of these new methods included genetically modified foods. During this time there was a lot of malnutrition, especially in France. Because of this, life expectancies were going down; the lowest being 35, the highest being 45-50. The advances in GMOs led to longer lifespans and better nutrition, which is where “genetically modified foods ending world hunger” comes from. But as time went on, health slowly declined again. So those “advances in agriculture” didn’t do too well in the long run. According to sirs.com, “…it is extremely important to criticize and understand the deep relation between morality and scientific advancement; however, it needs to be done with a complete and thorough knowledge of the science itself”(2016). If you search “Genetically Modified Organisms”, the first thing you will see is a picture of a tomato being pierced by syringes. This brings us back to the drama Monsanto has with the world. Their claim is that they’re “feeding the world” with their genetically modified foods, but what are we putting into these poor people’s bodies? And, if anything, there isn’t actually any proof that these genetically modified foods are solving world hunger. Poverty is the number one cause of starvation, not that there is a lack of food. So even if GMOs were good for our bodies, which they’re not, we are not actually helping the world. Manufacturers are just waving these cancer-causing foods in some malnourished kids and adults faces who can’t pay for it.Many scientist around the world argue whether or not GMOs are good for us and our bodies. We don’t know for sure what they do to us but we have tested them on animals, and the results don’t seem too promising or safe. In animals it can cause organ damage and even infertility due to the materials left over from the genetically modified foods that are then left in our bodies. There are also theories stating that GMOs are a contributing factor to chronic illnesses; which have jumped from 7% to 13% in the last decade. Allergic reactions caused by foods are showing up at a rapid rate in children. There has been a huge jump in childhood food allergies in the United States recently. However, scientists and doctors have failed to link this allergy growth to a change in America’s diet. Judeen Bartos, in Food Safety, states, “Beginning in 1996, bacteria, virus and other genes have been artificially inserted to the DNA of soy, corn, cottonseed and canola plants”(2011). These genetically modified foods risk triggering allergic reactions that can be life threatening, supported by evidence collected over the past decade that contributes to this statement and further proves that GMO foods are contributing to higher allergy rates. Doctors say that even though we don’t know this for certain, we should still take caution and that we should stop consuming GMOs before it’s too late. Some companies choose to label them or they just eliminate them all together. In 2015, Chipotle eliminated GMOs from their food products because of the world-wide debate over Genetically Modified Organisms. Most of the world has banned GMOs completely, so Chipotle decided to step back and produce non-GMO food. Other restaurant chains and companies are following in their footsteps and getting rid of GMO products. McDonald’s has since stopped using antibiotic treated chicken. The same goes for Subway. PepsiCo has also stated that they were going to stop using aspartame in their products. Aspartame is a modified sugar that companies put in diet sodas. Slowly, bigger companies are kicking GMOs to the curb, just like the world should. One of the biggest issues that people have with GMOs is that we don’t know when we consume them. Both the United States and China do not legally have to label their products and say if they contain GMOs. Some companies choose to label them or they just eliminate them all together. Labeling is an issue because some people feel lied to when they are eating products that contain GMOs. If you look at the packaging on most foods, there isn’t anything telling you when you’re eating GMOs or not. Most of the time, nobody knows what they are actually consuming. Here, in the United States of America, not all companies label if they have GMOs in their foods. They don’t have to because there isn’t a law that says that they do. It would be a simple fix if we just labeled them. Then, people could have the choice of destroying their bodies or not. Some people like GMOs, some people are against them, and some people just simply don’t care about them. But even doctors are saying to be cautious against them. So if the world decides to get rid of GMOs altogether, how do we? The problem is, we can’t. It is quite literally impossible. Since GMOs have been around for as long as they have, they have spread completely. There’s no way to get rid of all the seeds and crops that have been contaminated because of GMOs. The lack of biodiversity is also a reason we can never be rid of GMOs. They have contaminated our soil also. So unless we can uproot the earth and start fresh, we’ll never get rid of GMOs. They are a continuing problem that will affect the health of generations to come. Genetically modified organisms (GMOs) have affected this earth in many ways. Those ways are mostly bad. Since GMOs have been around, there has been an increase of illnesses and allergic reactions in children around the world. Most countries, except for America and China, have banned genetically modified foods all together. But now that we’ve had GMOs for this long, we cannot get rid of them. They are in our soil and in the seeds we get from plants. Also, the claim that genetically modified foods are are helping the end to world hunger is actually false. The problem with world hunger is it’s mostly caused by poverty. So having more food doesn’t mean people will/are able to buy it. Genetically modified foods are not “feeding the world.” It’s more like America and China are rubbing food in the poor people’s faces while they can’t pay for it. Also, how is it ending world hunger if the rest of the world has banned GMOs? Long story short, genetically modified organisms are bad for our health and the environment. The best way to improve these things is to get rid of them as much as we can. Otherwise, GMOs will affect our earth and the health of future generations.
