With
an intention to reduce dependency on fossil fuels, the electricity generation
government of Bangladesh has initiated the plan to set grid tied solar based
power generation projects in the government owned non-agricultural lands of the
country. Power generated from the solar park will be directly feed into the
grid on commercial basis. Two types of lands have been targeted for the solar
parks, those that are owned by the government but are not being used for
agricultural production and the other is the private lands owned by private
investors. Higher educational institutions and universities having a lot of
free areas can play an important role for the purpose of decreasing the
conventional energy consumptions and the amount of greenhouse gas emissions.
Moreover, the good news is that the costs for solar panels are expected to
continue to drop 41. This paper presents an analysis of feasibility of a 1.2
MW PV power plant for Hajee Mohammad Danesh Science and Technology University
for the purpose of being self-sufficient in terms of energy requirements. This
study has analyzed the technical and financial performances of the proposed PV
plant by conducting a detailed experiment using PVsyst and SAM software. The PV
plant is expected to generate an amount about 1.8-2.0 GWh clean and green
energy per year based on the simulation results of SAM and PVsyst softwares. By
implementing this plant, the university can save more than 1.1-3.0 million US $
over the lifetime of 25 years. The investment cost of the plant is found to be
1.27 US $ per watt of capacity of the plant. The payback period of the
investment for the PV plant is found to be 8.45-9.2 years. The PV plant can
reduce 26818 tons of CO2 in
its lifetime, which is an effective figure of mollification of greenhouse gas
emissions. The solar system has a limited lifetime of 25 years and however, the
proposed capacity of 1.2 MW can be extended in the future as the university has
enough land area available for accomplishment of the plant. The proposed solar plant
can be an initiative for the university to support current Bangladesh
government’s target of achieving 2000 MW of energy production from the
renewable energy sources by 2020. Further research will be done on the proposed
solar power system to increase the accurateness and predictability of the
softwares with using field data of solar power system.
